Elder Baird with Elder and Sister Keyes

We received a great letter and pictures from Elder Baird's Mission President and his wife, Elder & Sister Keyes. Thought that I would share. :)

 Dear Brother and Sister Baird:

We are pleased to notify you of your son’s safe arrival in the Ghana Accra Mission. We look forward to working with him and getting to know him better as we serve together. Be assured that we will do all we can to take good care of your son during the time he is with us.  Please feel free to contact us directly through email at 2011956@ldschurch.org if the need arises. Email is often an easier and more reliable way of communicating with us than attempting to call on the phone. ((+233) (0) 556502171)

We admire Elder Baird for choosing to serve a mission. We want to thank you for helping to prepare him for the great work he is doing. We know the Lord will bless him in his missionary service and will bless you for the support you give.

As you would expect, missionaries love to receive mail from both family and friends. We encourage you to write weekly.  In mailing letters to your missionary, you have two options.  The first option is to use the U.S. postal system and affix an airmail stamp.  Address your letters to your missionary at Ghana Accra Mission, P.O. Box 2585 Accra-Central (ARC), Accra, Ghana.

Your second option is to use what is referred to as the Church “pouch.” This means of communicating with your missionary is less expensive and requires first-class postage only. To use the Church pouch, simply write your letter on a regular-sized sheet of paper. Address the envelope to your missionary at Ghana Accra Mission, PO Box 30150, Salt Lake City, Utah 84130.  Please do not include any enclosures other than your letter.

With both options, once your letters arrive at the mission office, they will be held until someone travels to your missionary’s area. Please do not send cash through the mail! The Office Elders would be held accountable as this is against the law here in Ghana. Missionaries, families, and friends are also encouraged to communicate through email.

When mailing packages to missionaries, the required method is to use DHL, Fed Ex or another private carrier.  We strongly discourage using the post office for mailing packages.  Lately the post office has been having all packages, including those packages using flat rate envelopes, go through customs.  This means that a significant amount of additional money will need to be paid from personal funds.  Plus, there is detailed paperwork that takes significant time for the office elders.  When shipping packages by DHL or FED EX, they need to be sent to the Mission Office address at #6 King Hassan Rd., East Ridge, Accra Ghana.

Missionaries are given permission to call their families on Christmas Day and Mother’s Day.  We ask that you abide by this rule and not call your missionary or expect your missionary to call you at any other time.  If an emergency arises and you feel you need to talk to your missionary, please first talk to your stake president.

We ask for your prayers on behalf of your missionary, missionaries throughout the world, and those they are inviting to come unto Christ.  Thank you for your prayers.

Sincerely,
President Trevor Thomas Keyes

  1. As Lead Mail Clerk at my company, I say "Hear! Hear!" to the advice against using the USPS. The extra paperwork is horrific, and so using a private carrier, or better yet, the Pouch, is the only way to go.
    Keep on cooking dude!
