Temple, exchange and car wash! 9-2-2019
Temple Trip
This last week was quite the experience! As you can see from the title, I had three main things happen. First, we went to the temple, on Thursday, with everyone that I came on mission with. We went because they are closing the temple for maintenance, so we all got together for our last session together. It was a truly wonderful experience and it's amazing to think that almost two years ago was the last time we were all together at the temple. This was when we were in the MTC together. Time really flies by! To make the day even better, Sister Norkplim came to the temple specifically to meet with me before I left to go home (Sister Norkplim is the first women I baptized when I came on my mission). She stayed at the temple site for three days doing just temple work. She called me today to tell me how amazing it was to attend the temple for three days and how she learned so much. I am blessed to have met her and and see her progress in the gospel so quickly.
Right after the temple, I had the chance to go on an exchange with the Assistants to the mission president and it was such a great experience. I loved every minute of it. I was with Elder Bolli for the whole exchange and with him we had a great chance to talk about the mission and how we can help it progress and become better. During our exchange, we had the chance to teach a man (I forgot his name) who I actually met and found with the other Assistant about one month ago. They explained to me that before we taught him that he was involved with some drugs when he was younger and it has affected his mind. It makes his speech and thinking pretty slow. I was worried that teaching him would be difficult, but as I started to teach him I soon realized how humble and willing that man was to learn. He might have been slow, but he still wanted to know the truth. We taught him about the Plan of Salvation and he just absolutely loved it. He fully understood the necessity of the fall of Adam and Eve and was so happy that we taught him about it. He was happy because it answered so many questions that he had. After we left, I felt truly humbled by the Spirit. I learned that even when people have ailments or afflictions that to us seem to impair their understanding, we have no right to judge that. The Lord has asked us to teach the gospel to all of those willing and humble enough to accept it. I really was blessed to meet and to teach that man.
Then on Saturday, as a zone we did a free car wash as a means
of finding new people to teach. At first, it didn't look so good.
We got like one taxi and then for about forty-five minutes no one came. Some of the
other Elders were starting to complain a little because they felt that it was a
waste of time to sit there. I asked them to wait for another thirty or so minutes to see if people would start to come. Well just a few minutes after that, a car came,
and then another, and then another and then a another! Then some motorcycles
came, a couple trotros and some more cars. By the end of it, I think we washed
about 20 vehicles in about an hours time. The whole time the Elders were
laughing and smiling and were having the greatest time washing people's cars.
My job for most of it was to meet the owners of the cars and try to introduce
them to the church. Well, lets just say that part wasn't too hard because these
people were so interested to know as to why we were were washing cars for free.
They could not comprehend that someone would just start washing other peoples cars
for free. So when they came to ask me why we were washing their cars I just
said, "We are representatives of Christ and we are here to serve the
people of Ghana just as Christ served the people of Jerusalem." After
telling people that they were very excited to know more about the church. One
man said, "I have been looking for a church that serves people just as you
do. I have also been looking for the true church of God. I want to know more
and find out if this is the church for me."
Sincerely,
Elder Baird
